The Natural World as The Foundation of Philosophy: Recognition, Protection, and the Dramatic Legacies of Rachel Carson

Illustration, explanation and argument are the tools of environmental philosophy, introduced by Rachel Carson, who rarely receives the credit she deserves for her innovative methods. In this talk I will discuss the resonance of this method through decades of philosophy aiming to protect and defend the natural world. I will then explore implications for current praxis and politics, asking “How can environmental philosophy help protect water?” with a focus on the fight against the Dakota Access and other pipelines.

Respondents: Todd Hedrick, Michael O’Rourke
