  • 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. – Jazz: Spirituals, Prayer and Protest Concerts hosted and performed by the Professors of Jazz and Jazz ensemble at the College of Music Fairchild Theatre, (Free, but tickets required – can be obtained in Room 102, Music Building, or by calling (517) 353-5340)

Monday, January 20, 2020

  • 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. – Immerse yourself in the digital scholarship lab 360 room located in the MSU Library on the 2nd floor in the west wing. All are invited to engage with audiovisual material related to the legacy of the civil rights movement and the struggle for justice entitled “Turn the light of truth upon them.” Open 9-5pm on Monday, January 20 and will be playing for the remainder of the week between classes (actual conflicts will be posted by 1/17/19).
  • 9:30 a.m. – 2:50 p.m. – Student Leadership Conference (Union Bldg), including the Service Learning Project & Resource Fair (details pending).
  •  8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Voter Registration Resource Fair (Union Bldg, 1st floor main lounge) – Register to vote and learn more about the 19th amendment (sponsored by APAMEAWACSSLeague of Women Voters, and MSU Votes)
  • 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Health and Wellness Service Project (Work Life Office/Service Learning) – Room 113 Linton Hall – Faculty, staff and postdocs are invited to volunteer together to write cards, decorate placemats, create a craft, provide inspirational quotes, and donate in an effort to provide health and wellness packages for for Haven House, Child and Family Charities, MSU Safe Place, MSU Center for Survivors, and the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing.  One can volunteer on Jan. 20, 21, and 22 from 11-1:30pm.  In addition, donations for personal items are being accepted throughout campus from January 6 through January 30, 2020 as noted here
  • 11:30 a.m. & 5:30 p.m  – MLK Commemorative Celebration Films – shown at the Campus Center Cinema – room 117, 119 Wells Hall
  • 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Community Networking walk at IM East (sponsored by WACSS & WNA), Join and be paired up with others to receive ice breaker questions and view historical signs of momentous occasions around the track. Your ID card is required to enter IM East!
  • 3:00 p.m. – Commemorative March, Starting location: Union Building, first floor (main lounge); Destination: Beaumont Tower.  Join students, staff, faculty and community members in a symbolic march for social justice, equity, civil and human rights.  All are welcome.
  •  5:00 p.m. – Community scholarship dinner – Hubbard Hall dining room; doors open at 4:45 p.m.  This dinner was intended primarily for faculty & staff who work on MLK day and the community dinner is free and faculty, staff, students, and off-campus communities are welcome to attend.  A short program is planned with Brenda Nelson, Culinary Services Manager, as the keynote speaker.

  • 12-7:00 p.m. – Social Justice Art Festival – 2nd floor of Snyder Phillips – This one day festival engages students, faculty, staff and the greater East Lansing community around social justice topics through artistic expression.
