Dr. Reo Matsumura, PhD, is CEO, CTO, and cofounder
of Karakuri Products Inc., located in Tokyo,
Japan. Dr. Matsumura was awarded his PhD by the
Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka
University, in 2012. His research interests include
human-robot interaction, social implementation via
robotics, and the development of communication
robots. He currently directs the “Ghost-In-The-Shell
S.A.C. 1/2 sized TACHIKOMA” project.

This lecture will focus on an attempt to address the challenge of improving human
productivity through the integration of Otaku-Culture and Robotics. Japanese
society currently suffers from extremely low workplace productivity, manifested by a
rapidly aging society. By referring to various aspects of our research on the “Ghost-
In-The-Shell S.A.C. ½ sized TACHIKOMA project,” this presentation will demonstrate
one possibility for improving productivity via Otaku-Culture and Robotics, while
sharing my vision of where such research might take us in the future.
