Not Far from Here: Recent Iranian Video Art
Programmed by Kaveh Askari & Parisa Ghaderi

The Robin Theatre • 1105 S Washington Ave, Lansing, MI

Friday 1/17, 7:00pm, doors open at 6:30, free and open to the public

Join Associate Professor of Film Kaveh Askari and Assistant Professor of Graphic Design Parisa Ghaderi in exploring the diverse work of Iranian moving-image artists. Encompassing a variety of forms (animation, live action, archival), scales (from the intimate to the monumental), and affective ranges (from melancholy themes to playful or disturbing laughter), this survey emphasizes the cross-disciplinary and multi-media practices of contemporary Iranian video art. Audiences encounter work that expands out from professional graphic design, a city symphony made by a director of music videos, animations that form part of a painter’s oeuvre, and several works that are in conversation with the history of performance art and site-specific encounters.

Parisa Ghaderi, is a visual artist, curator, and filmmaker with BA in Visual Communications from Art & Architecture University (Iran), and an MFA in Art and Design from the University of Michigan. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and featured in The Huffington Post, The Brooklyn Rail, the Michigan Daily, the Visual ARTBEAT Magazine and more. She is currently an assistant professor of Graphic Design at MSU Department of Art, Art History, & Design.

Kaveh Askari is an associate professor in the film studies program at MSU and author of Making Movies into Art: Picture Craft from the Magic Lantern to Early Hollywood (BFI, 2014). He has co-edited four volumes of essays on film history and has organized several film preservation projects. He is currently working on a book titled “Relaying Cinema in Midcentury Iran,” which is under contract with the University of California Press.

The Broad Underground is an ongoing collaboration between the MSU Broad, Film Studies Program, and Department of English at MSU. This year’s partnering venue is The Robin Theatre in REO Town, Lansing. Special thanks to the Abrams planetarium and Lansing Public Media Center for their continued support.
