IAH will again sponsor a Faculty Learning Community (FLC) for this academic year, which will expand its previous focus on the role the arts and humanities play in the university and society as a whole.

With our new topic, “Teaching the Arts and Humanities to Enrich Lives,” FLC members will ask “How do we teach the arts and humanities as essential lifelong pursuits?” and will develop practices and materials that help students at MSU integrate the arts and humanities into their lives within and beyond the classroom.

One way we will approach this question is to discuss how faculty and others on campus address the IAH program goals in their classrooms and with students. IAH’s Revised Program Goals (as of Fall 2017) include:

  • Cultivate habits of inquiry and develop investigative strategies from arts and humanities perspectives;
  • Explore social, cultural, and artistic expressions and contexts;
  • Act as culturally aware and ethically responsible citizens in local and global communities;
  • Critically assess, produce, and communicate knowledge in a variety of media for a range of audiences; and
  • Recognize and understand the value of diversity and the significance of interconnectedness in the classroom and beyond.

The FLC will meet 5-6 times over the course of the academic year. Each meeting will address pedagogy and practice, combining discussion with hands-on workshops to develop concrete practices for implementation in current and future courses.

This faculty learning community is organized by Ellen Moll (mollelle@msu.edu) and Nicola Imbracsio (imbracsi@msu.edu) from the College of Arts and Letters and the Center for Integrative Studies in the Arts and Humanities. Please contact Nicola or Ellen if you have any questions.

Please join us this year for collegiality, good food, and an exciting ongoing conversation with other IAH faculty on how to communicate in our classrooms the essential role of the arts and humanities!

Our first meeting will be September 26, from 1:00-2:30, in 321 Linton Hall. If you cannot make the first meeting, you are welcome to join the FLC at any time.

Please fill out the RSVP form indicating if you would like to be part of this community (whether you can attend the first meeting or not).
