Tales from the Language Teaching “Trenches”: Conversations with K-12 FL Educators in the MAFLT Program

Foreign language education is a far different endeavor in the primary and secondary schools than it is here in a large R1 university. Most of the graduate students in the MA in Foreign Language Teaching (MAFLT) Program at MSU are currently full-time teachers across the U.S., offering over 14 different languages to learners from kindergarten to community college. In this interactive panel presentation, they will discuss their experiences in the field, including pedagogical trends and language policy issues, and explain how their graduate work in the MAFLT has influenced their practice. They have increased their ability to assess learning, evaluate curricula, create materials, and reflect on the effectiveness of their teaching, and they will share insights they have gained and provide suggestions for further research and innovations that would meet needs in their contexts.
