Suter Distinguished Lecture: Professor José Medina, Vanderbilt University
Uses and Misuses of the Imagination and the American Racial Imaginary
This lecture will elucidate what our capacity to imagine consists in and how it can be used to open up our minds, but also to perpetuate distortions and biases. Drawing on Wittgenstein and contemporary philosophy of mind, the talk will discuss social uses and misuses of the imagination in relation to race and the American racial imaginary. The lecture will include a discussion of racial images in our contemporary visual culture. How can we develop resistant imaginations that can help us overcome racial biases?
