2018-2019 Michigan State University Literacy Colloquy Presentation Dr. Gholdy Muhammad @ Erickson Room: 133F | East Lansing | Michigan | United States

From Dr. Muhammad’s community work with Black Girls W.R.I.T.E (Writing to Represent our Identities, our Times and our Excellence), historical and archival research on Black literary societies and from conducting a literature review over the past 25 years of Black girls’ literacies, she found that Black girls literacies are consumed in defining self, intellectualism, practices of resistance, and reading and writing toward social change. Drawing from the intellectual thought traditions of Black women leading thinkers, this session will unpack the Black Girls’ Literacies Framework (BGLF) with implications for literacy education and research. The presentation will conclude with a historically responsive four-layered equity model for teaching and learning that pushes beyond the limitations of the Common Core State Standards.
