Science as Experience: A New Approach to Science Communication
Megan Halpern draws on Dewey’s theory of aesthetic experience to develop a model that can reshape how we research, practice, and evaluate science communication. Drawing on her work in art-science collaboration and design-inspired public engagement with science and technology, Halpern illustrates three principles of her model. First, experiences are cumulative rather than transformative, second, that context shapes experiences; and third, that ultimately, audiences have agency in shaping the meanings they draw from their interactions with scientific content. Finally, Halpern offers insights into how to develop projects from an experience perspective.

Speaker: Dr. Felix Kronenburg
The basic blueprint of the physical classroom has not
changed all that much in over a century, even as new
teaching methods and approaches, new technologies,
and new interdisciplinary insights into better ways to
support learning have greatly advanced during that same
timeframe. Do we still need physical learning spaces in
this age of ubiquitous computing? If we do, how can we
design and build them so that they will be able to adapt
to new educational transformations? Dr. Kronenberg
will give insights into and solutions from the new
interdisciplinary field of learning space design.

Speaker: Christina Boyles – Assistant Professor of Culturally-engaged Digital Humanities
Nearly two years have passed since Hurricane María made landfall in Puerto Rico, yet its effects are still reeling through the islands. Rather than assisting with recovery, government agencies are engaging in what I term climatizing surveillance—mechanisms developed to both disempower Puerto Ricans and to ensure valuable resources remain in the hands of the wealthy elite. At its core, this enterprise seeks the erasure of marginalized peoples and their claims to commonly held lands and resources. This presentation will discuss how these processes operate in Puerto Rico, highlight their broader implications for a climate-stricken world, and outline strategies for resistance.

EJ Hill (b. 1985, Los Angeles; lives and works in Los Angeles) received his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2013 and BFA from Columbia College, Chicago in 2011. Solo exhibitions have been held at Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard, MA (2020); Company Gallery, New York (2018); He was a resident at the Studio Museum of Harlem, and is the recipient of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study Fellowship at Harvard University (2018-19), Foundation for Contemporary Arts’ Grants to Artists (2018); Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant (2018), the Mohn Public Recognition Award at the Hammer Museum’s Made in L.A. 2018 (2018), the Los Angeles Artadia Award (2018), the Art Matters Foundation Grant (2017), and the California Community Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists (2015).

Gordon Hall is a sculptor, performance-maker, and writer based in New York. Hall has presented solo exhibitions at EMPAC (2014), Foxy Production (2014), Temple Contemporary (2016), The Renaissance Society (2018), MIT List Visual Arts Center (2018), and Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (2019). Hall’s sculptures and performances have been exhibited in a variety of group settings including Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2010), SculptureCenter (2012), Movement Research (2012), Brooklyn Museum (2014), White Columns (2015), Whitney Museum of American Art (2015), Hessel Museum at Bard College (2015), Chapter NY (2015), Art in General (2016), Wysing Arts Centre (2017), Abrons Arts Center (2017), Socrates Sculpture Park (2017), The Drawing Center (2018), David Zwirner New York (2018), and the Verge Center for the Arts (2019).

Beatriz Cortez | February 17 | Virtual on Zoom | 4 PM EST
Beatriz Cortez (b. 1970, San Salvador, El Salvador; lives and works in Los Angeles) received an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, and a Ph.D. in Literature and Cultural Studies from Arizona State University. Cortez’s work explores simultaneity, life in different temporalities, and different versions of modernity, particularly in relation to memory and loss in the aftermath of war and the experience of migration, and in relation to imagining possible futures. She has had solo exhibitions at Craft Contemporary, Los Angeles (2019); Clockshop, Los Angeles (2018); Vincent Price Art Museum, Los Angeles (2016); Monte Vista Projects, Los Angeles (2016); Centro Cultural de España de El Salvador (2014); and Museo Municipal Tecleño (MUTE), El Salvador (2012), among others. Cortez has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including at the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle (2019); Ballroom Marfa, TX (2019); Socrates Sculpture Park, New York (2019); John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, WI (2018); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2018); BANK/MABSOCIETY, Shanghai, China (2017); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2017); Centro Cultural Metropolitano, Quito, Ecuador (2016); and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (2016). Cortez is the recipient of the Artadia Los Angeles Award (2020), the inaugural Frieze Arto LIFEWTR Sculpture Prize (2019), the Emergency Grant from the Foundation of Contemporary Arts (2019), the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Emerging Artist Grant (2018), the Artist Community Engagement Grant (2017), and the California Community Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists (2016).

Material tactility, its possibilities, limitations, and transformation form the core of Kelly Akashi’s practice. Originally trained in analog photography, traditional processes and the materiality of documents continue to inform and fuel her sculptural explorations. Working in a variety of media, such as wax, bronze, fire, glass, silicone, copper, and rope, Akashi investigates the capacity and boundaries of these elements and their ability to construct and challenge conventional concepts of form.
Born in 1983 in Los Angeles, Kelly Akashi currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. The artist graduated with a MFA from University of Southern California in 2014. Akashi studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste – Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and received her BFA at Otis College of Art and Design in 2006.
Currently on view at the Aspen Art Museum is a new commissioned sculpture, Cultivator, which will be on view at the museum’s Crown Commons through March 2021. Winner of the 2019 Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize the artist had a residency at the foundation in Ojai, California. Other residencies include ARCH Athens, Greece (2019) and at Headlands Center for the Arts, Sausalito, CA (2019) – both of which concluded with a solo exhibition. Other important solo exhibitions include Long Exposure curated by Ruba Katrib at the SculptureCenter, New York (2017). The artist’s work is currently featured in Ground/work at the Clark Art Institute and Possédé·e·s at MoCo Montpellier Contemporain in France. Other notable group exhibitions include the Hammer Museum’s biennial, Made in L.A. (2016); Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit (2017); LA: A Fiction, Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon, France (2017); Take me (I’m Yours), curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Jens Hoffmann, and Kelly Taxter, Jewish Museum, New York (2016); Can’t Reach Me There, Midway Contemporary Art, Minneapolis (2015).
