ELC Extended Orientation Workshop: Getting Fall-ish with MSU Sports

Learn about MSU’s Ice Hockey Team and get a tour of Munn Arena. We’ll tour the locker rooms, learn about what a Zamboni is, and even get to watch a bit of the MSU team practice on the ice!  *Limited to the first 10 students who sign up.

What: We’ll spend the day at Henry Ford Museum, a museum dedicated to American inventions and technology, such as cars, trains, and planes, where you can experience the sights, sounds, and sensations of America’s past. You will also be able to see one film at the museum’s Giant Screen Theater in 4k digital quality. Things you should consider seeing in the museum are the Rosa Parks bus, U.S. President limousines, and the Abraham Lincoln rocking chair. For more information, check out www.thehenryford.org

Cost: $45. Price includes transportation and entrance to the museum and film. Bring money for lunch and souvenirs.

Where: Great Lakes Crossing Outlet Mall (185 outlet stores) in Auburn Hills, Michigan. We will take a bus to the outlet mall and spend the day shopping. There are many restaurants and food shops in the mall for lunch . Meet at the west Wells Hall B entrance at the bottom of the stairway that leads to the ELC at 8:15 am. Do NOT be late!!

Who: ELC Students and anyone with an MSU APID

What: A one-day trip to Chicago. A bus will take you to downtown Chicago and drop you off. You can spend the day as you with. You will have a meeting time and place to get back on the bus and return to MSU.

Cost: $60* covers round-trip transportation to and from Chicago only. You  must bring your own spending money for shopping, sightseeing, and food.

Learning Symposium: A Conversation Among CALLeagues @ Wells Hall (B-Wing Classrooms)

The primary activity at this event will be low-stakes, open house-style Table Presentations with “lightning talks” focusing specifically on Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and ed tech tools and practices more generally. MSU’s Center for Language Training and Advancement (CeLTA) and hosts Adam Gacs (German) and Shannon Spasova (Russian) will also facilitate several presentations that will be broadcast and recorded for online participants.

Mind the Gap: Bridging the Researcher-Teacher Divide @ Wells Hall, B-Wing

This mini-conference event brings researchers and teachers together in dialogue around the questions “Do teachers care about research?” and “Do researchers care about teachers?” Plenary session presentations by researcher Dr. Masatoshi Sato (Universidad Andrés Bello, Chile) and a language educator (TBD) will be followed by a mixer in smaller break-out rooms, where language researchers and language teachers will engage in guided but informal dialogue. The event will conclude with a Town Hall-style forum, facilitated by MSU’s Second Language Studies program chair, Dr. Shawn Loewen.

Ed Tech Brown Bag #1: Speed Dating

ELC Ed Tech Specialist Austin Kaufmann will give a 2-minute Speed Dating pitch for each of his Ten Most Frequently Used Ed Tech Tools. Participants will note down which tools they are most interested in, and based on their top choices, Austin will create a semester schedule for smaller group trainings. (Feel free to bring your lunch!)
