This mockumentary follows the irrepressible Corky St. Clair as he writes and directs a musical extravaganza for the sesquicentennial of Blaine, Missouri. When he invites a New York agent to scout the show for a potential Broadway run, will the community rise to the occasion? Quirky characters tread on the edge of success and failure in a film at the edge of comedy and documentary, combining scripted and improvisational techniques.

James Naremore is Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, and the author of Charles Burnett: A Cinema of Symbolic Knowledge, the first book-length study of the director. His other books include More than Night: Film Noir in its Contexts, Acting in the Cinema, On Kubrick, The Magic World of Orson Welles, and An Invention without a Future: Essays on Cinema.

Textscapes are 3D printed documents to reemphasis printing in modern technological world. Printing technology was first created in ancient China to reproduce text using woodblocks, however today’s definition had been widely adopted in 3D printing, an additive process more often to create objects instead of duplicate text. Textscape generates letter-sized 3D documents to visually profile the subject matters of the texts, such as cities, landscapes or figures. These documents make reading process interactive for general audience or blind people, as knowledge as well as art. This series of work has variations of braille, language characters, calligraphies and number systems to bridge the contents and its visuality in architecture, landscape, portraits and abstract matters.

Hongtao Zhou is an interdisciplinary scholar and artist, he researches, practices and teaches in the areas of Design, Architecture, Exhibition Design, Furniture Design & Fabrication and Contemporary Sculpture & Installation. Hongtao holds a PhD from Purdue University, a MFA from University of Wisconsin-Madison and a MS from Northeast Forest University of China. He is a professor at Tongji College of Design and Innovation (D&I) and a visiting professor at University of Hawaii-Manoa (UHM). Hongtao had been serving as the Director of the UHM Haigo and Irene Shen Architecture Gallery. Currently he is Executive Member and Curator of the National Association of Chinese Artists in American Academia.

Hongtao has exhibited nationally & internationally including Centre Pompidou, Gwangju Design Biennale-South Korea, National Museum of China, Milan Design Week, Milwaukee Art Museum, Chazen Museum of Art, Haggerty Museum of Art, Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, Charles Allis Art Museum, Honolulu Museum of Art School, Philadelphia Art Alliance, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Beijing and Taiwan Design Center. He published his work and research in Interior Design, Interni, Design Bureau, Transmaterial, Metropolis, American Craft, Artdaily Zhuangshi Magazine, Modern Weekly and Huffington Post. Centre Pompidou and the University of Virginia collected his work. Hongtao’s work is currently on view in the 2019 Venice Biennale in collaboration with TONTSEN DESIGN in the European Cultural Centre Exhibition.

Description: In this talk, I will provide an overview of ongoing projects in the Corpus and TELL Lab at the University of Arizona, including an introduction to the two learner corpora we are developing, the Corpus and Repository of Writing (Crow), and Multilingual Corpus of Assignments: Writing and Speech (MACAWS). For both corpora, I will discuss both research and pedagogical applications that we are exploring. Both corpora are freely available to the public and access information will be provided for participants’ future exploration.

Language and Literacy Assessment for PreK-2 Students

To determine whether a language measure works well for test taker populations, it should be valid and reliable for all groups. Such groups include those whose first language is not English and/or those with limited speech production. If an early language battery is administered to multilingual children in just one of their languages, we have only a murky view of those children’s oral language skills. For diagnostic assessment, misclassification could result in children being directed into the wrong school services. Another issue is that assessments may not have been developed and validated with children from underrepresented groups or who would benefit from special accommodations. Sarah will share some of her lab’s research on two projects to develop language assessments for preschoolers and kindergarteners, specifically for phonological awareness/sensitivity, the understanding of language sound structure: 1) ATLAS, the Access to Literacy Assessment System, designed to be accessible for children with and without speech production difficulties; and 2) BAPS, the Bilingual Assessment of Phonological Sensitivity, for Spanish-English speaking children. She will also highlight differential item functioning (DIF), an item response analysis technique to check whether test items are measuring language proficiency in the same way for different groups.

Sarah Goodwin, Ph.D., is a Research Associate in MSU’s Department of Human Development and Family Studies. In their Early Language and Literacy Investigations Laboratory (, she conducts psychometric analyses of early language assessments and manages lab data. She also teaches research methods for graduate students. Sarah’s research interests include language assessment, listening skills, and second language acquisition. Her work can be found in Language Assessment Quarterly; Assessing Writing; and Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools.
