Nowhere @ MSU Union Art Gallery, Rm 230 | East Lansing | Michigan | United States

Opening just in time for the East Lansing Art Festival, Nowhere, presents a solo exhibition featuring the sculptures of Matthew Boonstra, on view until June 20, 2017 at the MSU Union Art Gallery.

Boonstra utilizes his studio practice to explore his interest in materials, processes, and concepts in a free associative manner.  These investigations are developed in an autobiographical context concerning his role in contemporary life.  His recent series, Nowhere, was developed to explore feelings of living in rural central Illinois. The investment of making has helped him to internalize thoughts and then in turn externalize his feelings. Through his work, he hopes to lead the viewer to question the nature of the object, and how and why it exists.

Persistent Legacy: The Partition of British India at 70 @ International Center | East Lansing | Michigan | United States
On Friday, the 15th, the MSU community takes the lead with sessions featuring practitioners and scholars from a range of departments who will illuminate a wide range of issues since 1947 in the shadow of Partition. We are still in the planning stages on these sessions and would welcome the participation of faculty and advanced graduate students from your units.  Panels could take up diverse topics such as agriculture, arts and humanities, social sciences, foreign affairs, education, culture, politics and policy, and science and technology.   At a minimum, we envision two panels on South Asia’s development in the independence era, another on the cultures and politics of the region, and a fourth on the lessons of Partition for the US and the world. We are open to other panel ideas as well. The Friday symposium will be held on the third floor of the International Center.  The symposium also is negotiating with prominent scholars to deliver the Friday symposium keynotes to round off the sessions.  Finally, funds permitting, we hope to organize a musical or dance performance to close out the symposium on Friday night.
