Los Angeles-based textile artist Karen Hampton examines the African American diaspora and explores her personal and ancestral narrative through the art of embroidery, coupled with found textiles and a multitude of textile techniques. Her work recounts her own complex family history and gives voice to long-forgotten stories that tell about African-American experience.

Dr. Joanne Turney is a Design Historian specializing in textiles and fashion as material culture. Turney teaches at the University of Southhampton, Winchester School of Art in the UK. Her book, The Culture of Knitting, is seminal knitwear research and is the framework for understanding the complicated position of knitwear in contemporary culture.

Artist Statement
Whether understood as complex physiological organisms or as souls swaddled in flesh, humans embody mystery and potentiality. My interest goes beyond the unseen and incorporeal elements to embrace the physicality of people as well as their collective psychology. I find subtle moments revealing—the tension in an arm, the curve of a shoulder, the intense look in an eye, and the connections people make when they look at each other.
My work rides the edge between different modes of painting with color acting as a central component. I am drawn to that space where representation meets abstraction and where volume and flatness intersect. Overlapping marks create layers of paint that both reveal and conceal, similar to our physical surroundings’ ability to both reflect and influence our identity. My current series acts as both a study of persona and as conduit to express emotion for myself, for the model, and for the viewer. Through the use of color and the expressive language of paint, my work connects the personal to that which links us as human beings.
Biography
Clarissa R Gerber received her Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Michigan State University in 2011. Gerber is a figurative painter who uses color and the expressive language of paint to present the human form, both physically and psychologically. Her work has been exhibited numerous times in national juried exhibitions, including the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition in Brooklyn, New York; Gallery 263 in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Union Street Gallery in Chicago Heights, Illinois; and First Street Gallery in New York City. In 2015, Gerber had a solo exhibition entitled Sensation in the Sheetz and McLanahan Galleries on the campus of Penn State Altoona. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. Additional information and images of Gerber’s work are available at ClarissaRGerber.com.
Fundamentals of Comic Art and Graphic Novel students from this semester will have their work featured at Hollow Mountain Comics and Games in East Lansing, MI. This in-store signing on Saturday, December 8th begins at 12pm and ends at 2pm. Stop-in to purchase a copy of their comic books and get it signed by the artist.
The MSU Advanced Comic Art and Graphic Novel students will conduct 4 separate signings across the great state of Michigan as they embark on the largest signing tour ever attempted by an MSU Comics cohort. Stop-by any of the locations to buy a comic book and get is signed by the artist.

Seth is the award-winning cartoonist behind the comic book series Palookavile. He is also the designer for several classic comics reprint series, notably the collections of work by Charles Schulz, John Stanley, and Doug Wright. Seth is the 2019 Comics Forum Creator Keynote Speaker.
The primary activity at this event will be low-stakes, open house-style Table Presentations with “lightning talks” focusing specifically on Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and ed tech tools and practices more generally. MSU’s Center for Language Training and Advancement (CeLTA) and hosts Adam Gacs (German) and Shannon Spasova (Russian) will also facilitate several presentations that will be broadcast and recorded for online participants.
This mini-conference event brings researchers and teachers together in dialogue around the questions “Do teachers care about research?” and “Do researchers care about teachers?” Plenary session presentations by researcher Dr. Masatoshi Sato (Universidad Andrés Bello, Chile) and a language educator (TBD) will be followed by a mixer in smaller break-out rooms, where language researchers and language teachers will engage in guided but informal dialogue. The event will conclude with a Town Hall-style forum, facilitated by MSU’s Second Language Studies program chair, Dr. Shawn Loewen.
