Painting provides me a process driven opportunity to experiment, discover, manipulate, play, and sometimes even tell a story. I value mark making and like to see evidence of the history of the process in the finished painting. Narrative has been a component of my art that allows me to ask questions and make observations. I use whimsy as a means to enliven or to soften the content. Recurring themes and images return to new environments. Images that possess a personal iconography are infused with content from experiences and memories that hold power. I begin by creating an active ground plane, and then working out to the surface, sometimes finding rather than imposing imagery. I enjoy working figuratively, layering, searching for ideas and inspiration from the manipulation of the media, and often but not always embracing a narrative.
Adding papier-mâché sculpture to my studio involvement has been a logical and natural extension to my previous singular focus of two-dimensional work. The process is reductive, starting with foam forms that have been created by gluing construction foam into blocks that can be carved. Papier-mâché mulch and layers of paper finish off the surfaces and ease transitions and contours. The torn paper can communicate a new narrative while holding onto its past. I find myself stacking forms which is another way of layering, bringing elements together in proximity or support, contrasting familiar with fantastic.
Dianne Wolter graduated from Michigan State University in 1965 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a teaching certificate. Teaching and studio involvement have been the focus of her professional life since then. She concentrated on fabric collage for the first 14 years of her creative journey, teaching it in public schools throughout southern Michigan sponsored by the Michigan Council for the Arts. In 1979, Wolter began teaching after school art classes in her home studio to area children. Sharing her studio with children was a rewarding and meaningful opportunity. To concentrate more fully on her own art, she retired from teaching in 2002 to focus more on painting. A whim to make a cat riding on a unicycle introduced sculpture as an additional interest. Since then, Wolter has been enjoying both sculpture and painting.

Spanning the genres of sculpture, ceramics and design, Del Harrow is an Associate Professor at CSU. His art practice integrates traditional manual and skill-based forming processes with digital fabrication technology. His work is an ongoing exploration of the possibility that a tactile physical form might contain, creating sites for the imagination and the thinking of thoughts.

The second slice, titled On Environment, looks at how artists, designers, and scholars research the challenges that human society poses to environment.
In this workshop we will hear from Edgar Cardenas, Zach Kaiser Associate Professor of Graphic Design and Experience Architecture, Kelly Salchow MacArthur Associate Professor of Graphic Design, and Lily Woodruff Associate Professor of Art History, and Visual Culture.
Special guest Edgar Cardenas is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow for the MSU Center for Interdisciplinarity (C4I), he holds a Ph.D. in Sustainability from Arizona State University and conducts research at the art-science interface. He recently completed an Andrew W. Mellon Research Fellowship at the University of Michigan with the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities where he focused on approaches for fostering productive artist-scientist collaborations. As a social scientist, he focuses on social creativity and small group dynamics, exploring which processes and mechanisms support creative collaborations. As an interdisciplinary artist, he investigates the ecological, cultural, and technological subtleties of human/environment relationships. He also is a member of the indigenous artist collective, Radio Healer. As a member of the C4I community, he will be leading research on various ways in which art can inform and enhance interdisciplinary research across campus.

In this workshop we will hear from Qais Assali Artist-in-Residence: Critical Race Studies, Laura Cloud, Associate Professor of Studio Art, Jon Frey Associate Professor of Art History and Visual Culture, and Therèsa Winge, Associate Professor of Apparel & Textile Design.
Qais Assali, Visiting Assistant Professor and Artist-in-Residence, Department of Art, Art History, and Design, is a visual artist and educator. His work has been internationally exhibited including at Jeune création, Paris (2016); Tiradentes, Brazil (2016); The Overlook Place, Chicago (2018); and solo exhibitions at Akademirommet, Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo (2015) and Khan Al Wakala, Nablus (2016). He has worked as a Lecturer, Research and Teaching Assistant, and Graphic Designer at a number of academic institutions in Palestine. He holds two master’s degrees – an M.F.A. from Bard College and an M.A. in Art Education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The Open House celebration of ISDay (International Sculpture Day) is Saturday, April 27 from 12:00pm-4:00pm, located in the Sculpture Building. The open house features work by graduate students Mary Peacock and Marcos Serafim, as well as graduating senior Richard Tanner. Textscapes are 3D printed documents to reemphasis printing in modern technological world. Printing technology was first created in ancient China to reproduce text using woodblocks, however today’s definition had been widely adopted in 3D printing, an additive process more often to create objects instead of duplicate text. Textscape generates letter-sized 3D documents to visually profile the subject matters of the texts, such as cities, landscapes or figures. These documents make reading process interactive for general audience or blind people, as knowledge as well as art. This series of work has variations of braille, language characters, calligraphies and number systems to bridge the contents and its visuality in architecture, landscape, portraits and abstract matters.
Hongtao Zhou is an interdisciplinary scholar and artist, he researches, practices and teaches in the areas of Design, Architecture, Exhibition Design, Furniture Design & Fabrication and Contemporary Sculpture & Installation. Hongtao holds a PhD from Purdue University, a MFA from University of Wisconsin-Madison and a MS from Northeast Forest University of China. He is a professor at Tongji College of Design and Innovation (D&I) and a visiting professor at University of Hawaii-Manoa (UHM). Hongtao had been serving as the Director of the UHM Haigo and Irene Shen Architecture Gallery. Currently he is Executive Member and Curator of the National Association of Chinese Artists in American Academia.
Hongtao has exhibited nationally & internationally including Centre Pompidou, Gwangju Design Biennale-South Korea, National Museum of China, Milan Design Week, Milwaukee Art Museum, Chazen Museum of Art, Haggerty Museum of Art, Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, Charles Allis Art Museum, Honolulu Museum of Art School, Philadelphia Art Alliance, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Beijing and Taiwan Design Center. He published his work and research in Interior Design, Interni, Design Bureau, Transmaterial, Metropolis, American Craft, Artdaily Zhuangshi Magazine, Modern Weekly and Huffington Post. Centre Pompidou and the University of Virginia collected his work. Hongtao’s work is currently on view in the 2019 Venice Biennale in collaboration with TONTSEN DESIGN in the European Cultural Centre Exhibition.

Atul Bhalla is a conceptual artist who uses photography, performance, video, sculpture, and installation to immerse himself in the physical, historical, spiritual, and political significance of water. Bhalla is a Professor in the Department of Art and Performance Art at Shiv Nadar University in India.
Luis A. Sahagun | Wednesday, November 20 | Broad Art Museum | 7pm
Luis Sahagun is an AAHD Artist-in-Residence: Critical Race Studies. Sahagun’s drawings, sculptures, paintings, and performances confront the palpable inescapability of race and transforms art into an act of reclamation. As a previously undocumented immigrant and former laborer, Sahagun’s work focus on the importance of Latinx cultures and contributions in order to combat the anti-immigration and anti-Latinx national rhetoric that persists throughout the country.
