Research Talk Title: The Normalization of Physical Language Learning Spaces
The basic blueprint of the physical language classroom has not changed all that much in over a century, even as new language teaching methods and approaches, new technologies, and new interdisciplinary insights into better ways to support learning have greatly advanced during that same timeframe. Therefore, it is time to address the built environment’s power over how we teach languages, the “built pedagogy,” and look critically at that classroom blueprint.
Dr. Felix Kronenberg will analyze how classrooms and other physical spaces for language learning have become so normalized that alternative designs are an exception rather than the norm. He will discuss the implications that physical spaces have for learning and teaching in general and for languages in particular, and how interdisciplinary research can lead to a reconceptualization of physical language learning space design.
Our kids programs are open to children ages 6-12 and are designed to provide a fun learning environment that focuses on playful interactions in the target language. It will sensitize children to language learning, help them acquire an awareness and appreciation of other cultures, enhance their understanding of the native language, and hopefully motivate them to pursue language study. Our goals are to introduce the children to different facets of the target language and culture, expand their existing knowledge, and increase their abilities in speaking and listening while incorporating some reading and writing in the target language. We emphasize functional language use and cultural awareness. Our small class sizes allow us to work more closely with your children, differentiate instruction, and maximize learning outcomes. Concurrent sections to accommodate different levels are offered for most languages.
Multiple-program/child discounts are available (10%). To qualify, registrations must be on the same transaction. Classes will be cancelled if fewer than 5 students enroll. All classes meet in Wells Hall.
Arabic meets on Mondays from 5:00-6:00 pm, starting January 22 and running for 10 weeks through April 16, 2018. There will be no class meetings during MSU’s Spring Break (March 5-9) and area schools’ Spring Breaks (March 26 – April 6).

In this talk, Dr. Ted Merwin, Associate Professor of Judaic Studies at Dickinson College, argues that Judaism’s characterization as a “worldly” religion in which the pleasures of the body are openly celebrated goes only part of the way to explain the ubiquitous nature of erotic themes in American Jewish culture. Tracing the use of sexual themes in an array of films, TV shows and stand-up routines—ranging from Eddie Cantor’s Whoopee and Philip Roth’s Portnoy’s Complaint to “The Contest” episode of Seinfeld and the audacious comedy of Sarah Silverman and Sacha Baron Cohen —Dr. Merwin will plumb the depths of the interest in sex in American Jewish popular entertainment to suggest that Jews opened a space for themselves in America partly through their unusual frankness and openness about sexuality.

In this workshop, we will review current theoretical issues in language placement testing that affect all placement testing programs at Michigan State University and beyond. The most import issue is that placement tests must work in consort with program articulation and course offerings. We will review several placement test uses at MSU as examples to demonstrate the large variety of placement plans that exist even at one university. And more locally and practically, we will review tips and treasures of Qualtrics, a survey and test software that can be used for computer adaptive testing and, in particular, placement testing. Qualtrics is now university wide at MSU, and we will discuss how it is currently being used for placement into the Chinese language program at MSU. We will also discuss issues related to test security and test score interpretation, and the MSU need for Qualtrics-score-triggered automatic overrides (a necessity that the larger language programs must have).

This weeklong study away program in Silicon Valley takes place during summer 2018. Students will earn 2 credits while focusing on networking and career paths in accessibility. The goal of the program is to introduce students to what accessibility is and why it is important, create opportunities to forge networks and develop possible career paths, connect them with alumni and friends of the College, and get a sense of the place and culture of Silicon Valley.
