Join CAL, CeLTA Staff, and the CeLTA Director Search Committee for a research talk by Dr. Felix Kronenberg, Associate Professor, Modern Languages and Literatures, Director of the Language Learning Center, Rhodes College, Memphis Tennessee.

Research Talk Title: The Normalization of Physical Language Learning Spaces

The basic blueprint of the physical language classroom has not changed all that much in over a century, even as new language teaching methods and approaches, new technologies, and new interdisciplinary insights into better ways to support learning have greatly advanced during that same timeframe. Therefore, it is time to address the built environment’s power over how we teach languages, the “built pedagogy,” and look critically at that classroom blueprint.

Dr. Felix Kronenberg will analyze how classrooms and other physical spaces for language learning have become so normalized that alternative designs are an exception rather than the norm. He will discuss the implications that physical spaces have for learning and teaching in general and for languages in particular, and how interdisciplinary research can lead to a reconceptualization of physical language learning space design.

  • Navah Wolfe is a Hugo and Locus Award-nominated editor at Saga Press. She is also the coeditor of Robots vs Fairies and The Starlit Wood: New Fairy Tales, which won the Shirley Jackson Award and was a finalist for the World Fantasy Award, British Fantasy Award, and the Locus Award. In 2017 she was selected as a Publishers Weekly Rising Star.
  • DongWon Song is an agent at Howard Morhaim Literary Agency representing science fiction and fantasy for adults, young adult, and middle grade readers as well as select non-fiction. He was formerly an editor at Orbit and a product manager for the ebook startup, Zola Books.
They will take part in a public conversation on the present and future of publishing, hosted by Kate Fedewa (WRAC Professor).
When: Monday, January 22, 2018, from 6:30 p.m. to roughly 8:00 p.m.
Where: International Center, room 115, on the MSU Campus
​In addition to talking about their own experiences in editing and publishing, DongWon and Navah will take questions from the audience.​

In this workshop, we will review current theoretical issues in language placement testing that affect all placement testing programs at Michigan State University and beyond. The most import issue is that placement tests must work in consort with program articulation and course offerings. We will review several placement test uses at MSU as examples to demonstrate the large variety of placement plans that exist even at one university. And more locally and practically, we will review tips and treasures of Qualtrics, a survey and test software that can be used for computer adaptive testing and, in particular, placement testing. Qualtrics is now university wide at MSU, and we will discuss how it is currently being used for placement into the Chinese language program at MSU. We will also discuss issues related to test security and test score interpretation, and the MSU need for Qualtrics-score-triggered automatic overrides (a necessity that the larger language programs must have).

Michigan native Michael Moore’s début film Roger and Me not only broke new ground in its presentation of the documentary essay, but was also a commercial and critical success.  Released in 1989 the film is filled with caustic humor, and nearly 30 years later – in a post industrial age – remains relevant today. And with Michigan ingenuity – like so many of our students today – the film was made with little more than a camera, thoughtfulness, and audacity.

Taking a cue from the Broad’s exhibition Michigan Stories: Mike Kelley and Jim Shaw, this program presents three films—two of which are Kelley collaborations—that are dark allegories of modern life: Peggy and Fred and Pete (1988), Kappa (1986), and Blind Country (1989). Children raised by television wander a post-apocalyptic landscape. A hedonistic folk demon satirizes the Oedipus myth. And a castrated buffoon is led through a feminine “realm of the senses.” Traditional sources of authority are unmasked, and we are cast into a dystopian present. As the narrator of Blind Country recites: “Our experience is surely, but gently, becoming pure absence. That is our evolutionary imperative. All prying objects, all things striving to trespass are diminishing. Now there is only acceptance. Accept, accept your loss.”


Broad Underground is an ongoing collaboration between the MSU Broad, Film Studies program, and Department of English at MSU. This year’s partnering venue is The Robin Theatre in REO Town, Lansing, with special thanks to the Lansing Public Media Center.

Join CAL, CeLTA Staff, and the CeLTA Director Search Committee for a research talk by Dr. Alejandro Cuza-Blanco, Professor of Spanish and Linguistics, Director of Linguistics, and Director of the Heritage Language Program in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Purdue University.

Research Talk Title:  The Acquisition of Spanish as a Heritage Language during Childhood: Reconciling Formal and Pedagogical Theorizing

The first part of this talk discusses the acquisition of grammatical gender and N/ADJ word order in Spanish-English bilingual children. A picture-naming task revealed overextension of the masculine form and high levels of ungrammatical word order strings. There were no significant differences by age with gender concord or N/ADJ word order. I argue that the differences found stem from a re-assembly of gender features leading to both morphological and syntactic variability. This approach conceptualizes heritage language variation along the lines of current linguistic theorizing regarding the role of innate linguistic principles and language experience. The second part of the talk discusses the role of literacy instruction in the development of reading and writing skills in young Spanish heritage children (K-4). Measures included phonological awareness, receptive vocabulary knowledge, word reading accuracy and fluency. Results showed significant gains for the treatment group across all measures. Contextualized and explicit instruction on word reading and decoding, as well as oral language and vocabulary knowledge, helped the children develop literacy skills in their L1. The study provides strong evidence towards validating the efficacy of service-learning/engagement programs aimed at facilitating early child bilingual development.
