Oct 17 2018 – Feb 3 2019 all-day
MSU Broad | MATTER(S): Bridging Research in the Arts and Sciences @ Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum | East Lansing | Michigan | United States

This exhibition brings together new and recent projects by participants in the BRIDGE Artist-in-Residence Program at Michigan State University—a three-year-long initiative connecting international, cutting-edge artists with faculty and students across the university’s many colleges. With their shared interests in materiality and topical issues—the dual “matters” invoked in the exhibition title—the artists and their collaborators address a wide range of phenomena through interdisciplinary approaches to research, experimentation, and knowledge production. The exhibition thus reveals an “epistemological turn” in the arts and sciences, focusing on how knowledge is produced and how the process of production inflects meaning and interpretation. This major presentation highlights the incredible resources the university has to offer, and how artists and scientists work together to imagine the future, today.

Featured artists include Art Orienté Objet (Marion Laval-Jeantet & Benoît Mangin), Evelina Domnitch & Dmitry Gelfand, Tagny Duff, HeHe (Helen Evans & Heiko Hansen), Zbigniew Oksiuta, Kuai Shen, Stelarc, and Sissel Tolaas.

MATTER(S) matter(s): Bridging Research in the Arts and Sciences is co-curated by Steven L. Bridges, Associate Curator, and Jens Hauser, Guest Curator and MSU Distinguished Affiliated Faculty. Support for this exhibition is provided by the MSU College of Arts and Letters; MSU BRIDGE Artist-in-Residency Program, directed by Adam Brown, Associate Professor; Science Gallery Lab Detroit; Goethe-Institut Chicago; and the Eli and Edythe Broad endowed exhibitions fund.

Moscow Doesn’t Believe in Tears (Vladimir Menshov, 1980)

Presented by Yelena Kalinsky

Living together in a workers’ dorm, Katerina (Vera Alentova) and her friends are determined to make it in Moscow. But when a boorish cameraman (Juri Wassiliev) forces himself on her, Katerina finds herself pregnant and alone as her friends move on. Twenty years later, she’s fought to become a factory director, outpacing her old roommates career-wise, but still alone but for her daughter. When she meets a genial mechanic (Aleksey Batalov), love seems possible again.

Testing & Tasting: Language Assessment Research and Reading Group @ Wells Hall B243
Nov 9 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Testing & Tasting (or the language assessment research and reading group) is a group for practitioners and researchers interested in language testing and assessment. Meetings provide a forum for both faculty and students to learn about advanced assessment topics and discuss language testing in a friendly setting- with snacks! The group usually meets once a month, with each meeting featuring presentations from SLS students, faculty members, or testers of the ELC testing office. Recommended readings (if there are any) will be sent to the whole group via email before each meeting. We have Dr. Paula Winke, Dr. Dan Reed, and Dr. Koen Van Gorp as regular faculty advisors, and occasionally we invite guest speakers to Skype in.

Discussion topic: Designing classroom assessments using Qualtrics

Presenter(s): Dr. Paula Winke & Aaron Ohlrogge

Dr. Paula Winke and Aaron Ohlrogge will show the group how to use Qualtrics (a free survey tool) to design and administer classroom assessments. Arron Ohlrogge works for the ELC testing office, and he oversees the development, production, and administration of the MSUELT, EAP exams, MSU Speaking Test, and the Low Level Test.
