This in-depth conversation will examine Michel Parmentier’s early experiments in painting and his collaborations with artists Daniel Buren, Olivier Mosset, and Niele Toroni. Dr. Philip Armstrong, Professor of Comparative Studies at The Ohio State University, and Dr. Lily Woodruff, Associate Professor of Art History at MSU, will discuss Parmentier’s work within its historical context and how he challenged institutional conventions of the 1960s.

Michel Parmentier is curated by Marc-Olivier Wahler, Director, with Steven L. Bridges, Associate Curator, and is on view through Oct. 7.

Helina Metaferia is an AAHD Artist in Residence: Critical Race Studies. Metaferia is an interdisciplinary artist working in performance, video, installation, and collage. Her research is devoted to asserting the black body into sites of systemic oppression. Her lecture is presented in association with a solo exhibition at (SCENE) Metrospace.

2019 Master of Fine Arts Exhibition

The Master of Fine Arts Exhibition is the culmination of a three-year program in which artists explore their creative practice under the supervision of a faculty guidance committee. Extensive study in a medium or area of concentration, combined with coursework in the history of art and related fields, helps each artist situate their work within the broad field of contemporary art and design practice. The Department of Art, Art History, and Design celebrates the creative research of Laurén Brady, Chelsea Markuson, Mary Peacock, Mehrdad Sedaghat, and Andrew Somoskey as evidence of their achievement and continuing promise.

This year the annual Master of Fine Arts Prize will be awarded to an outstanding candidate by guest juror Dr. Tina Rivers Ryan, Assistant Curator at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

The 2019 Master of Fine Arts Exhibition is organized by the MSU Department of Art, Art History, and Design and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University, with curatorial oversight by Georgia Erger, Curatorial Assistant. Support for this exhibition is provided by the Graduate School at MSU and the John and Susan Berding Family Endowment.

Abstraction, Bare Life, and Counter-Narratives of Mobility: A lecture by Professor Robert Burgoyne @ B122 Wells Hall | East Lansing | Michigan | United States
In this presentation, Professor Robert Burgoyne considers the contrasting portrayals of refugees and mass migration in the films of Richard Mosse and Ai Weiwei as an attempt to move beyond the conventional visual rhetoric for representing the stateless population. The extraordinary black, white and grey images that comprise Mosse’s multi- part work, Incoming—recorded with a thermal camera that reads the heat emanating from the body—creates a visual record that is at once the trace of intimate biological processes and an alarming, disorienting representation of a tragedy that is both consequential to and distant from our daily lives. In contrast, Ai Weiwei’s film Human Flow depicts the practice of hospitality as a symbolic antidote to the idea of the stateless person as threat. Emphasizing the right to be “at home” anywhere in the world, Ai’s interviews with refugees attempt to facilitate what Hannah Arendt calls the “public performance of voice,” opening a space of belonging through the sharing of stories. However, the representation of stateless persons through the lens of empathy and hospitality also conveys its own forms of disempowerment and complicity. Arendt’s 1951 essay, “The Decline of the Nation-State and the End of the Rights of Man,” provides a critical touchstone for this analysis.
