Identity is fluid. It is pieced together. It intersects. It can be lost and then found. It can bend, break, and be mended. It is a continuous growth.
SemiTransparent features introspection, reflection, and restraint in an amplified, complex retrieval of identity specific to gender, language, and privacy. Although these works speak to my own identity and experience, they are made to be universal. Through the exertion of working in three-dimensions, I labor through my emotions, stubbornness, and vulnerabilities. It forces me to consistently question ideas of self-worth and arbitrary values within the constructs of social hierarchies. I allow my work to dictate the materials used – metal, paper, wood, clay, textile, electronics – and I allow materiality to shape forms that both substantiate and oppose. The idea of lending oneself to a material aids in underscoring my point of view. Working in mixed media, I derive intimacy from the use of scale and monumentality as well as its reversal. The act of repetition illuminates the obsessive qualities embedded in the processes of my work, while allowing the full context to remain elusive to the viewer.

Public Art: Understanding and Practice

This exhibition celebrates the eight artists that took on the challenge of a collaborative Mural project. The mural is on permanent display in the Grove Street Alley in East Lansing’s downtown and is titled: A Colorful Melange; We All Belong Here and was made under the guidance of Professor Benjamin Duke.
I invite you to join us summer 2018 for this year’s project.
This class combines travel with artistic production. We will travel to New York City, Grand Rapids and Detroit to see significant works of Public Art and then make some for our community. We will cover all aspects of production from generating a theme, sourcing the image, putting together a professional public art proposal, to execution and instillation of the work.

The 2018 Master of Fine Arts Exhibition marks the culmination of a
three-year degree program that emphasizes extensive creative exploration under the supervision of a faculty guidance committee. Focused study in an area of concentration, as well as coursework in art history and related fields helps each artist situate their work within the larger discourse that characterizes the practice of art today. The creative research of Jazzmyn Barbosa, Laura Baszynski, and Liz Luna stand as evidence of achievement and promise.
This year the annual Master of Fine Arts Prize will be awarded to an outstanding candidate by guest juror Nabila Abdel Nadi, Assistant Curator at The Power Plant, Toronto, ON.
The 2018 Master of Fine Arts Exhibition is organized by the MSU Department of Art, Art History, and Design and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum (MSU Broad), with curatorial oversight by Georgia Erger, Curatorial Assistant. Support for this exhibition is provided by The Graduate School at MSU and the John and Susan Berding Family Endowment.
Dr. Elizabeth Sanders introduced many of the tools and methods being used today to drive and/ or inspire design from a human-centered perspective. Sanders teaches Design at The Ohio State University and is the founder of MakeTools. Recently she co-authored Convivial Toolbox: Generative Research for the Front End Design.
Dr. Joanne Turney is a Design Historian specializing in textiles and fashion as material culture. Turney teaches at the University of Southhampton, Winchester School of Art in the UK. Her book, The Culture of Knitting, is seminal knitwear research and is the framework for understanding the complicated position of knitwear in contemporary culture.

Whether understood as complex physiological organisms or as souls swaddled in flesh, humans embody mystery and potentiality. My interest goes beyond the unseen and incorporeal elements to embrace the physicality of people as well as their collective psychology. I find subtle moments revealing—the tension in an arm, the curve of a shoulder, the intense look in an eye, and the connections people make when they look at each other.
My work rides the edge between different modes of painting with color acting as a central component. I am drawn to that space where representation meets abstraction and where volume and flatness intersect. Overlapping marks create layers of paint that both reveal and conceal, similar to our physical surroundings’ ability to both reflect and influence our identity. My current series acts as both a study of persona and as conduit to express emotion for myself, for the model, and for the viewer. Through the use of color and the expressive language of paint, my work connects the personal to that which links us as human beings.
Clarissa R Gerber received her Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Michigan State University in 2011. Gerber is a figurative painter who uses color and the expressive language of paint to present the human form, both physically and psychologically. Her work has been exhibited numerous times in national juried exhibitions, including the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition in Brooklyn, New York; Gallery 263 in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Union Street Gallery in Chicago Heights, Illinois; and First Street Gallery in New York City. In 2015, Gerber had a solo exhibition entitled Sensation in the Sheetz and McLanahan Galleries on the campus of Penn State Altoona. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. Additional information and images of Gerber’s work are available at ClarissaRGerber.com.

Maria has taught aspiring designers and peers how to plan and implement branding and design programs at various institutions. Dr. Stephen Eisenman is a Professor of Art History at Northwestern. Eisenman is the author of nine books, including most recently Zooicide, with the artist Sue Coe. Eisenman has also curated and reviewed exhibitions, written articles and op-eds. Eisenman will present the keynote lecture for the 2018 Art History & Visual Culture Symposium.
